Carnarvon Hwy

Description

The Carnarvon Highway is a state highway of Queensland, Australia, linking Moree south of the NSW/QLD border, via the town of St George, eventually to the township of Rolleston. Formerly, north of Roma it was known as the Carnarvon Developmental Road. National Route 46 runs from Mungindi to the Castlereagh Highway just south of St George. From here, the A55 continues north, through St George and Surat to Roma. The A7 then continues north from Roma to Rolleston, which continues along the Dawson Highway and Gregory Highway to Emerald and Charters Towers.

We have travelled along part of the Carnarvon Highway when towing our caravan between Roma to Rolleston in Queensland. Our fuel consumption was higher than normal on this section of road as we were at about 180 metres above sea level at Roma and then climbed to about 586 metres at Rolleston. The road is good and you may meet a few road trains along the way.

Some tips for the trip:

  • Big Rig at Roma is worth a stop - the oil rig was built in 1900 and the park has a display of mining machinery used in the area.
  • Visitor Information Centre - very friendly staff and great gifts.
  • Injune - about one hour north of Roma - great place to stop for coffee at Cafe on Second located next to the visitor information centre
  • Public toilets located next to Visitor information - very clean. Injune is a convenient place to stay to explore Carnarvon Gorge.
  • There is a small service station at Injune.
  • Rolleston - stopped at Beazley Park for lunch which has shaded picnic tables and good toilets. There is a dump point located at the edge of the park and plenty of room to park with the van.
  • Rolleston has a service station
  • Rolleston is located at the northern entrance to Carnarvon National Park
  • Small caravan park that looked neat and tidy.
