North West Coastal Hwy

North West Coastal Hwy

Description

North West Coastal Highway is a generally north-south Western Australian highway which links the coastal city of Geraldton with the town of Port Hedland. The 1,300-kilometre-long (808 mi) road, constructed as a sealed two-lane single carriageway, travels through remote and largely arid landscapes. Carnarvon is the only large settlement on the highway, and is an oasis within the harsh surrounding environment. The entire highway is allocated National Route 1, part of Australia's Highway 1, and parts of the highway are included in tourist routes Batavia Coast Tourist Way and Cossack Tourist Way. Economically, North West Coastal Highway is an important link to the Mid West, Gascoyne and Pilbara regions, supporting the agricultural, pastoral, fishing, and tourism industries, as well as mining and offshore oil and gas production.

The North West Coastal Highway does from Port Headland to Geraldton down the West Australian coastline. This highway forms part of Highway One that runs all the way around the Australia and we travelled this section of road during our recent caravanning adventure. There are several well maintained rest areas along the North West Coastal Highway that are well maintained free camps with toilets, dump points, picnic tables and areas for fires. Lots of shade.

Some of the highlights of our trip in this part of Western Australia:

  • Port Hedland - large harbour with ships that carry iron-ore. RvTrips suggest taking the Seafarer Tour of the harbour and learn about the wonderful service they provide to crew members of these large ships.
  • Point Samson - really lovely caravan park and great fishing.
  • Cossack - historic village and an vantage point to watch the staircase to the moon phenomena
  • Roebourne - former gold rush town with National Trust Buildings
  • Karatha - busy town with great facilities
  • Dampier - North West Shelf Gas Project (check out their interactive visitor information centre) - tour of the Dampier Archipelago
  • Exmouth - Ningaloo Reef - see turtles coming in to nest along the coastline. Great Snorkelling
  • Coral Bay - Swim with the Manta Rays or whale sharks - great snorkelling
  • Carnarvon - Point Quobba Blowholes, One Mile Jetty, OTC Dish and wonderful outlets selling local fresh produce - seafood, fruit and veges
  • Shark Bay - Denham, Monkey Mia, Stromatalites, Steep Point, Francois Peron National Park - so much to see
  • Kalbarri - magnificent scenery
  • Hutt Lagoon - the pink lake
  • Geraldton - large town - beautiful foreshore, Bill Sewell Complex at the Visitor Information Centre, HMAS Sydney Memorial - kite surfing

Most of the towns and sights I have listed are on the coastal side of the North West Coastal Highway but there are many wonderful places to visit on the inland side - we just ran out of time on this trip.
