Of course we all know that Albury sits on the border of NSW and Victoria and across the mighty Murray River from Wodonga. We have driven past Albury on a number of occasions but recently had the opportunity to stay a few days and explore the area.

There is a huge Jayco dealer and service centre on the edge of town and we were able to have the 1000 kilometre service completed before we set up camp for the night. While waiting for the van we drove into Albury for coffee and morning tea – Gluten Free chocolate brownie, lemon citrus tart and hot coffee at the Brick Lane Restaurant and Bar- delicious.

Next stop the Visitor Information Centre near the historic railway station in the centre of town. The VIC is housed in an old two story building and has plenty of parking available plus lovely gardens. Make sure you also take a look in the Railway station - beautifully restored.

We stayed at the Albury BIG4 Tourist Park on Wagga Road and found this to be a warm welcoming place. Craig and Kerrie Richardson have not owned this park for long but you can already see improvements happening around the grounds. This park has a lovely shaded pool, backpacker accommodation and a bright sunny enclosed camp kitchen with comfortable lounge seating and TV. They have brightened the amenities by painting each toilet and shower door a different colour. An added touch to this friendly caravan park is the supply of shower mats and hand towels in the amenities for the use of guests.

We had lunch at Smart’s Bakery which is across the road from the BIG4 - friendly service and great choices. There is very Aldi's supermarket near the baker and the caravan park is only a short walking distance from a large shopping centre. Just down the road (about 500 metres) are two very good pubs with nightly meal specials - Boomerang and Northside Hotels.

Here are some of the things we did while visiting Albury:

  • Memorial Lookout – views around the area through the trees.  Toilet block, picnic tables
  • walked through the lovely parkland along the river with a number of sporting fields. Large swimming complex. Public Pizza Ovens – these are apparently fired up every second weekend and people are encouraged to bring their own goodies to cook – bread, pizza, focaccia, etc.
  • Deck Café – beautiful spot overlooking the grassed area beside the Murray River. Next to children’s playground and picnic areas.  Behind the café is a public shower and toilet block
  • Flying Fruit Fly Circus. Go in and watch the students training. Fabulous talent and great facility.
  • leisurely drive around Wodonga
  • Hume Dam and Lake Hume – large expanse of water. Original dam wall was commissioned between the wars and is a huge engineering feat. This is also a hydro-electric station. Walk along the wall and see the amount of water flowing down the Murray River.

There are a number of small country towns close to Albury/Wodonga and you can easily spend several weeks exploring the area.  Highly recommended.
