We stayed in Broken Hill for several nights in early December before the weather became too hot. There are a huge variety of attractions in town which once known for mining in the area, but now also famous for art galleries and outback sculptures. Of course mining is important to the history Broken Hill and you will find tours and museums dedicated to this aspect of life.

Take a trip to Silverton and have lunch at the pub and spend the afternoon looking around this small, historic village - count the number of dips along the road from Broken Hill to Silverton. Lunch at the pub was great and then you should take the CHALLENGE.  All money goes to charity.

Some other suggestions for your visit to Broken Hill are:

  • RFDS headquarters and take a tour. Buy some gifts from the shop and help support this great service
  • Sculptures and the living desert sanctuary
  • Silly Goat Cafe - on Argent Street
  • Silver City Art Centre - Home of the Big Picture. This painting is 100 metres long and 12 metres high - amazing.  Also silver gifts and chocolates.
  • the Visitor Information Centre (of course)
  • Palace Hotel used in the movie Prisclla Queen of the Desert - pay particular attention to the staircase murals

Keep an eye out for the many historic buildings around Broken Hill as there is so much more to see than the list above. Plenty of accommodation available in town including two caravan parks.

I would recommend a visit to the Miners Memorial, it is great to learn more about the mining history of this iconic town. The architecture is magnificent and there is a great view over the city. There is a giant bench seat up there also which is great for some funny photos and for feeling like a little kid again! There is also a good cafe and restaurant at the Miners Memorial if you want to make a meal out of the visit. If you are really adventurous there are historic mine workings around Broken Hill that have tours underground... complete with wooden logs propping up the tunnel!
