Forbes is a town in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia, located on the Newell Highway between Parkes and West Wyalong. At the 2011 census, Forbes had a population of 7,560. Forbes is probably named after Sir Francis Forbes, first Chief Justice of NSW.

Forbes is a country town in NSW found on the Newell Highway - about 150 kilometres from Dubbo. The Newell Highway is a popular route for trucks and caravans driving between Victoria and Queensland.

Our first stop was at Forbes Country Bakehouse in the centre of town where we enjoyed morning tea and some welcoming, friendly country service. They serve an all day breakfast and have a range of yummy baked goods. After enjoying our coffee and scones we headed to the BIG4 Forbes Holiday Park to set up the caravan. The BIG4 is conveniently located near the highway and river. The park is pet-friendly and has two cabins available for furry friends.

There are several other caravan parks in town, plus a very nice free camp area on the banks of the River at Wheogo Park – near the Lions Park which has toilets and a dump point. Forbes can be very busy when caravanners head north for the winter and I would suggest booking ahead.

One thing I recommend to do while in Forbes is to drive out to the Bunnings / Spotlight Centre (Homemakers Centre), and check out the mural on the Spotlight building's wall. As you look closer you will realise that the people depicted in the Mural have been created out of various shades of natural wool. Each person is a local farmer whose names are listed on the plaque which also explains the creation of this amazing artwork. The 2012 Western Districts Exhibit, winner of the People’s Choice Award for the Sydney Royal Easter Show, now has a permanent home on the wall of this Spotlight building. The mural is visible from the highway but I highly recommend you stop and take a closer look – amazing.

Also at this Homemaker Centre is the Café Aglio & Olio where you can enjoy great Italian food. We ordered takeaway which was later delivered to the BIG4 Forbes Caravan Park for a mere $3 fee.

We called into the VIC for information on the local area and purchase some local products as well as handmade Christmas decorations. The Visitor Information Centre is housed in the historic Forbes Railway Station and is also the location of the Arts and Tourist Centre.

Forbes is where Ben Hall is buried and there are lots of historical locations around town relating to this bush ranger – he was killed nearby and is buried here. A map is provided showing a cemetery walk to see his grave and those of other local historical persons of note – even that of Ned Kelly’s sister Kate.

A motor Museum with a collection of meticulously restored cars and bikes is easily found as the building on the Newell Highway has a car on the roof.  This is McFeeters Motor Museum.

Gum Swamp Bird Hide is about 4 kilometres from town and 2 kilometers after Fitzgerald's Bridge as you head towards West Wyalong. Interesting to with the car park near the bird hide and plenty of bird life – pelicans, ducks, pigeons, water fowl, cockatoos etc.

While staying in Forbes we also enjoyed meals at the Roundabout Bakery (corner Sheriff and Court Streets), Forbes Inn (Rankin Street), A Classy Touch Florist and Café (15 Rankin Street), The Brew Coffee and Juice Bar on Lachlan Street and the Vandenberg Hotel on Court Street. All very good.
