Gundagai is a small country town located on the Hume Highway, about half way between Sydney and Melbourne. This is a great place to break the journey and there are several accommodation options - caravan parks and motels. We stayed at the Gundagai Tourist Park and enjoyed a lovely afternoon walking around the town before heading to the Gundagai District Services Club for a cold drink and a take-away Chinese meal.

The Visitor Information Centre is in Sheridan Street (just across the road from the Club) and it is a great idea to call in and look at Rusconi`s Marble Masterpiece - 20,948 pieces of carved marble which took 28 years to complete. Carberry Park (next to the Visitor Information Centre)  is where you will find copper statues of Dad, Dave, Mum and Mabel sculpted by Aurel Ragus. These characters were made famous in radio and television shows and apparently the theme song was 'Road to Gundagai', so they ended up here.

I was fascinated by the historic wooden bridges that span the Murrumbidgee River flood plains which are quite an engineering feat - well worth a look. This is a lovely country town with nice wide streets and lots to see - even a dog on a tucker box 5 miles away (sounds like the line from a song)!
