RvTrips' review

20 Jan 2016

While travelling around NSW we decided to stay at the Gundagai Tourist Park – a Top Tourist park located on Nangus Road next to the public pool. Gundagai is just a short drive off the Hume Highway, midway between Sydney & Melbourne on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River. A very convenient place to say with friendly, welcoming staff at the caravan park in the middle of this iconic country town.

Gundagai Tourist Park has a number of covered drive through sites which are great to escape the heat on a summer afternoon in December. The sites have ensuites if you wish to pay a little extra and they are long enough to leave the car hooked up - these are narrow but flat and there is an aerial outlet provided on the post beside the van in order to receive television signal - this gave us very clear reception. Tip - carry an aerial cable with you (I missed Dancing with the Stars once).

Features of this small friendly park include:

  • fully self contained, air conditioned cabins with ensuites
  • 40 drive through undercover powered ensuite sites
  • powered and unpowered camp sites
  • the Council Swimming Pool is right next door
  • Woolworth, RSL, Golf and Bowling Clubs are located just across the road
  • grassy tent sites
  • free undercover BBQ
  • Children's playground
  • Kiosk
  • clean amenities, laundry

The Park is just a two minute stroll to the Historical precinct of Gundagai cafes, antique shops and art galleries - a gate at the rear of the caravan park provides easy access to the pool and the short walk to town. This is an excellent stop over point when you are travelling north or south on the Hume Highway and a starting point for those using the Murrumbidgee canoe/kayak trail. There is a boat ramp into the Murrumbidgee River at Gundagai.

We went for a long walk before dinner and were amazed at the engineering work that went into the construction of the historic wooden bridges built to span the Murrumbidgee flood plains - these are so unique that they are listed by the National Trust. The Gundagai Visitor Information Centre is only a short walk from the park and they will provide walking trail map highlighting things to see in town.

We were on our way home for Christmas and only had one night available to stay in Gundagai, but I hope to have more time on our next trip to explore more of this interesting part of NSW.
