South Coast

The South Coast refers to the narrow coastal belt from Sydney in the north to the border with Victoria in the south in the south-eastern part of the State of New South Wales, Australia. It is bordered to the west by the coastal escarpment of the Southern Tablelands, which is largely covered by a series of national parks, namely Jervis Bay National Park, Eurobodalla National Park, and Ben Boyd National Park. To the east is the coastline of the Pacific Ocean, which is characterised by rolling farmlands, small towns and villages along a rocky coastline, interspersed by numerous beaches and lagoons (known in Australia as lakes, especially in place names).

The South Coast Region of NSW includes the Illawarra and runs down the coast from Sydney to the Victorian Border. I find this part of the coast quite different to that north of Sydney with rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean and shorter beaches. Wollongong is a large city which was once famous for its steel making industry - a very popular place for skydiving, hang-gliding and abseiling.

Kangaroo Valley and Berry are located inland and are very pretty places to visit for a day trip or stay overnight - very popular weekend retreats for people working and living in Sydney.

You should also visit the blowhole at Kiama and enjoy morning tea or lunch at the many trendy cafes along the main street. Batemans Bay is popular holiday and weekend destination with the people living in the ACT - can be very busy over the weekends. Head further south and  try some of the wonderful cheese that is produced at Bega or visit the Whaling Station at Eden. The South Coast has a large number of coastal towns and should be on your list of future holiday destinations as it is great for fishing, windsurfing, scuba-diving and all types of watersports - very picturesque.
