Werris Creek was originally settled as a railway town and the railway station itself was built in 1879. Some of the old buildings at the railway station now house a railway museum which is very interesting - learn about the history of catering for the railways, see rail memorabilia, and enjoy a miniature train display on the upper level.

Upon entry you are asked for a gold coin donation which we happily contributed and one of the volunteers was willing to show us around – including a demonstration on the train driving simulator. The surrounding grounds have large statues on display made from steel rods depicting workers on the railway lines.

Werris Creek is only about 45 kilometres from Tamworth in NSW - a lovely country drive on good roads.

We stopped in the main street and went for a walk taking photos of the park and new children’s playground. The public toilets are housed in a lovely brick building in the centre of the parkland across from the shops.

At the corner of Single Street (main road through town) and Anzac Parade you will find Coffee Corner - a pharmacy, gift shop, toy shop, gelato bar and café.  What a great find as you will see once you step inside.  The café was warm and welcoming and was almost full with locals having a cuppa or lunch.  We sat down for coffee with scones jam and cream and then saw some of the delicious lunches being served so decided to share an open grilled sandwich.  The workers behind the counter realised that we were sharing and served this on two plates with a side salad each – wonderful and highly recommended.  Once we found out that the gelato was made on site we had to try some – macadamia flavour highly recommended.

What a lovely little town - great to visit, even in the rain.
