Darwin is a beautiful city located at the top of the Northern Territory. I was very surprised to see how tropical the gardens were - I had pictures in my mind of Darwin after cyclone Tracey. Plenty of National Parks to explore in this area - we have been to Litchfield to see the huge termite mounds and swim in the clear fresh water, and of course Kakadu and Yellow Water Billabong. Darwin is known for great fishing spots - everybody wants to catch a barramundi and see a salt water crocodile.

There is plenty to do - fish feeding at (Aquascene), Doctors Gully was a favourite when my children were younger. You can check out the history of the pearling industry and find out about the bombing of Darwin during WWII (I was surprised at how much damage was done in this part of Australia).

Accommodation is available overlooking the harbour and there are a large number of interesting restaurants to choose from. Of course don't forget the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets and watch the sunset over the Arafura Sea. These market are held Thursday and Sunday evenings and they are so much fun. A huge variety of food is on offer (Thai, Sri Lankan, Indian, Chinese, Greek Portuguese etc) - Yum. You will be able to buy lots of unusual gifts here at these Market and enjoy the buskers as you walk around - I cannot wait to go back to Darwin.

The thing I like the most about the Darwin Region and the NT in general is the people. Everything is a little more relaxed up there and the locals place a lot of value on having a chat (over a beer) and sharing stories. This gives the region a very friendly feel and quickly makes you switch into holiday mode. The fishing is great (that's why I normally visit) but you do have to venture out of Darwin to find the better spots, and make sure you are with someone experienced with the region as there are some big lizards around...
