Katherine is one of the larger town towns in the Northern Territory about 320 kilometres south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway. The Visitor Information Centre in Katherine is very well organised to cater for caravans and motorhomes - there is a large area alongside the centre specifically set aside for caravan parking.

Katherine Visitor Information Centre is located opposite the shopping centre so we walked across the road to do purchase groceries. We had been warned that this was a very busy supermarket and to expect to wait a long time in the checkout queue - we had our coffee while waiting. This is apparently one of the busiest Woolworths supermarkets in Australia. After chatting with other people in the queue I learnt that the man behind me was Dennis McIntosh - author of Beaten by a Blow (about his experience in the shearing sheds) and The Tunnel (about his observations of working class men and their politics while working on the underground sewerage tunnels in Melbourne). A very interesting man who was heading to a small community near Katherine to teach.

There is so much to see and do around Katherine - here are the things we did during our short stay:

  • Edith Falls - about 60 kilometres north of Katherine - spring fed and flows all year. Great walking tracks around the various pools with wonderful views of the surrounding country
  • Tour of Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge). Our guides were two two aboriginal men who were extremely knowledgeable about the local area, the gorge, the plants and animals and the indigenous history. Fascinating stories.
  • Katherine hot springs - Thermal Pools. A short work from the car park down several stairs and very relaxing to sit in the warm water
  • Katherine Low Level Nature Reserve - a low level bridge built during WWII to cross the Katherine River - now a picnic spot and swimming hole
  • Katherine Markets - great range of local products
  • Big 4 Low Level Caravan Park with the beautiful outdoor Big Fig Bistro.

Katherine is a very busy town which has a range of services for travellers and some great art galleries. We drove through Katherine a couple of times while travelling in the Northern Territory - once heading up to Kakadu and again before heading to Kununurra in Western Australia.

Katherine is a nice NT town, but it has the busiest Woolworths in the world! It is a tourist attraction in itself. Make sure you allow plenty of time for your shopping and enjoy the experience.
