Lake Mary Ann - Tennant Creek

Description

Lake Mary Ann is situated about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north of Tennant Creek, Northern Territory just off the Stuart Highway. It is a man-made dam where some water sports can be conducted such as swimming or canoeing, surrounded by landscaped grassy areas on one side and natural bushland on the other. Council is currently spending half a million dollars as first stage of a major upgrade to the facility. Originally the site was investigated with a view to increase the water supply for Tennant Creek and Peko Mine in the late 1940s, and later again in the mid-1950s. In 1977, several local residents proposed that a recreational dam be constructed close to Tennant Creek. The NT Government supported the proposal and construction commenced during 1979/80. It was originally called the Mary Ann Dam.

Lake Mary Ann is about 6 kilometres north of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory and is their main recreational waterway. There are lovely shaded picnic tables scattered throughout the grassed area beside the lake.  A pontoon sits just off the shore for a jumping platform into the water. There are plenty of parking spaces provided around the edge of the picnic area and we saw a number of visitors relaxing under trees after enjoying a swim.

A boat ramp leads to the water for easy access but I am unsure of they types of boats allowed on this lake. There are barbeque and toilet facilities provided for visitors and a children's play ground for the little ones. I am sure this is a very popular spot for the local community as the weather in Tennant Creek can be very hot - it reached 40 degrees during our visit to the area. We even saw a number of ducks and chooks seeking shelter from the sun under some of the large trees.
