Watarrka National Park in the Northern Territory is where you will find the amazing geology and cliff formations known as Kings Canyon. Kings Canyon is a valley cut through layers of sandstone - up to 440 million years old.

There are a several walks within the National Park and these are clearly marked. Signs along the tracks provide information on the various features, surrounding plant life and animals that live in the area. We were able to undertake the following walks at Watarrka:

  • Kings Canyon Creek Walk – a relatively easy walk along the edge of the creek (no water) to a viewing platform that looks up to the wonderful red/orange cliffs of the canyon. Large parking area with wifi coverage and good signs showing where walks lead to and how they are marked with orange or blue arrows. A large hat sits on the fence – cement – I guess reminding people to wear one.
  • Kings Canyon Rim Walk (from the same car park) is highly recommended. This is best done early morning before it becomes too hot. First part of the walk heads up about 100 metres before heading around the top or rim of the canyon. Great viewing areas but you can get very close to the edge in some spots - be careful.  Garden of Eden – down several steps and to the bottom of a ravine. Much cooler and a permanent body of water. Up the stairs to other side of canyon and then along rim before heading down to car park. Wonderful morning as the temperature was only 22 when we started.
  • Kathleen Springs Walk.  A little further along the road from the Kings Canyon Resort. A permanent water supply that was used by the Aboriginals where two ridges join together making it a great place to catch animals when they came to the waterway to drink (they cannot get out again without going past you). This was later used by cattlemen to water cattle – a stockyard was built for overnight stays. Also used to corner horses for capture. This path is fully sealed and is wheel chair accessible – about 2.5 kilometres return.

We stayed at the Kings Canyon Resort which is the closest accommodation to Kings Canyon. They have created a couple of walks within the resort to view the King Canyon Range – one walk leads to a viewing platform to watch the sunset and view the changing colours of the cliff faces.

RvTrips highly recommend a trip to Kings Canyon.
