Charters Towers

Description

Charters Towers is a city in northern Queensland, Australia. It is 134 kilometres (83 mi) inland (south-west) from Townsville on the Flinders Highway. In 2011 the population was 8,234 people. During the last quarter of the 19th century the town boomed as the rich gold deposits under the city were developed. After becoming uneconomic in the 20th century, profitable mining operations have commenced once again.

Charters Towers is about 1.5 hours drive from Townsville in north Queensland. It is a large country town and during our caravan trip around Australia we stayed at the Aussie Outback Oasis Cabin and Van Village - a Big 4 tourist park. There are several other caravan parks in town - one backs onto the golf course. We really enjoyed our stay in Charters Towers and found plenty to do around the area.

The centre of Charters Towers consists of a number of heritage building and the Visitor Information Centre conducts walking tours around town. We enjoyed a coffee at the Stock Exchange Building - apparently this was the first exchange outside a capital city and was used during the busy gold mining days.

Another interesting place to visit is Tower Hill which contains a number of mine shafts from the gold rush days and has a great view of the city and surrounding area (some of the shafts have not been fenced). There are 30 concrete bunkers scattered over the area which were used to store bombs, detonators and ammunition during WWII. Located on the Hill is a Seismograph Station with a sensing probe extending approximately 90 metres into the ground. Computer recordings are digitised and sent to the University of Queensland and to the United States of America. The “Magnetic Hut” shelter on the first rise of the Towers Hill Road is one of only six in Australia used to measure changes in the earth’s magnetic field. This was quite a learning experience.

Charters Towers has a drive-in theatre which is still in operation and shows movies Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Mostly children's movies - but how exciting for the kids. Next time we stay in town we will head to the drive-in just for fun. The markets were on the day we left so we stopped for a look around - they were very good with interesting home made products. I purchased some great gifts for new babies in the family. The streets of Charters Towers are very wide which make it easy to tow the caravan around town and find a parking space.
