The Visitor Information Centre suggested out first stop in Charters Towers should be Towers Hill Lookout and Ampitheatre. The lookout allows great views of the city and surrounding area - shaded seating is available and we saw a number of locals sitting here enjoying their lunch. A film is shown during the evening in the Amphitheatre, called Ghosts after Dark - the history of Charters Towers which involves ghosts (The Visitor Information Centre sells tickets and provides information on viewing times).

Towers Hill is the site of the first gold discovery in the area and there are a number of mine shafts around the hill. A track at the summit leads off to the ruins of the Pyrites Works and a walking track continues down the hill and back to the entry gate at the base - signs are erected everywhere to warn about mine shafts that have not been fenced (stay on the track for safety).

This hill also contains 30 concrete bunkers used to store bombs, detonators and ammunition during WWII. There are informative storyboards along the road with details on the location of these interesting constructions.

The Seismograph Station with a sensing probe extending approximately 90 metres inside the hill sends digitised computer recordings to the University of Queensland and to the United States of America. The Geosciences Centre in Canberra is now in charge of this seismic equipment. The “Magnetic Hut” shelter on the first rise of the Towers Hill Road is one of only six in Australia used to measure changes in the earth’s magnetic field. What a fascinating place to visit?
