We have been through Emerald several times during our travels around outback Queensland. It is a good place to refuel and stock up on supplies and enjoy great food - we usually call in at the Emerald Bakery for sausage rolls. This seems to be a large commercial centre with plenty of shopping outlets and places to stay.

Emerald is a large, modern country town that was established in 1879  - located at the junction of the Gregory and Capricorn Highways, Queensland. Emerald is now considered the hub for the Central Highlands and the gateway to one of the richest sapphire fields in the southern hemisphere.

Fairbairn Dam and  Lake Maraboon are located about 20 kilometres from Emerald - important for agriculture across the region and coal mining in the Bowen Basin. Lake Maraboon is a wonderful holiday destination with a selection of accommodation -cabins, caravan and camping. The lake is stocked with fish including barramundi, but is famous for the Red Claw Crayfish. RvTrips highly recommend a visit to Lake Maraboon - a beautiful spot.

Emerald was once famous for sunflower production and has a huge Van Gogh sunflower painting on an easel located in Morton Park at the western end of Clermont Street (Capricorn Highway). Adjacent to this you will find the Visitor Information Centre - volunteers will give information about Emerald and the surrounding Central Highlands.

Great stopping destination when exploring inner queensland. We get take away pies from the bakery and head to the park for a picnic with the kids. Very friendly locals that are willing to help you out in anyway!
