Far North Queensland

Description

Far North Queensland, or FNQ, is the northernmost part of the state of Queensland, Australia. The region, which contains a large section of the Tropical North Queensland area, stretches from the city of Cairns north to the Torres Strait. To the west lies the Gulf Country and North Queensland is the region to the south.

The Far North Queensland Region covers most of Cape York Peninsula, Cairns and inland to Georgetown and Croydon. It also contains the Atherton Tableland which is a very tropical area with various agriculture products - bananas, avocados, mangoes coffee, tea, milk production (a large annual rainfall). This is an interesting place to visit with a comfortable average temperature range, and we spent several weeks exploring the area.

To date we have only been as far north as Cooktown but hope to get to the top of Cape York one day. Black Mountain is an amazing thing to see on the road to Cooktown - huge black granite boulders that appear to be stacked on each other (the surrounding rock has been eroded away).

During our trip we were lucky enough to be in Mareeba when they were staging the annual wheelbarrow race - teams of runners push a wheelbarrow about 139 kilometres from Mareeba to Chillagoe. There is a parade before the race starts and each team dress up in costumes to walk down the main street pushing the wheelbarrow. Lots of fun.

Far North Queensland is a popular tourist destination - the weather is always good and the Great Barrier Reef is close by.

I travelled far up the Cape, many years ago now, to Weipa. I would highly recommend this destination if you are planning a trip to the northern reaches of Queensland. The fishing was great, probably the best variety of conditions I have experienced. There are plenty of interesting locals to trade stories with and I remember doing a tour of the local Aluminium ore (Bauxite) mine which was very interesting. Great spot to explore.
