Goondiwindi is a town in Queensland at the intersection of a number of major highways - Cunningham, Leichhardt, Newell and Barwon. We passed a number of road trains on our way into town. Goondiwindi is well known as home of the famous horse Gunsynd (the Goondiwindi Grey) who won numerous races around the country after being purchased for about $1200 in a local pub. Gunsynd is listed as one of Queensland’s icons and in 2005 was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. There are trophies and memorabilia of this remarkable horse on display at the Visitor Information Centre and Library.

The Visitor Information Centre  is located in the middle of town and can be accessed via Bowen Lane or Marshall Street (the main street).

Three caravan parks in Goondiwindi as well as space at the showground for overnight stay.

  • Rivergums Caravan Park is within walking distance to town. This is a small park with about 20 powered sites as well as cottage accommodation.  Located well away from the main highway and close to the river.
  • Goondiwindi Top Tourist Park – a member of Top Parks and discounts apply.  This park is located several kilometres from the city centre and just off the Leichardt Highway as you head towards Toowoomba. It is a large park with plenty of grass/dirt drive through sites. Slab sites are available with a 2 night minimum stay.
  • Goondiwindi Holiday Park is a member of Family Parks and is situated close to the Cunnigham Highway which heads towards Warwick and the Gold Coast. This was our choice while staying in Goondiwindi with friendly service and plenty of space on sites.  Each drive through site is separated by trees or palms which provide shade.

A memorial statue of Gunsynd near the river and nearby is an Old Bridge built in 1915 still operating - signs along the river indicate flood depths over the years. There is a lovely bicycle/walking track on top of the levy bank with plenty of toilets along the way plus a number of children's playgrounds.

Bontanical Gardens have been created around a lake on the edge of town.  A number of covered picnic tables with barbeques facing the lake with large grassed areas for families. Toilet block near the entrance for convenience. Walking track around the gardens with signs placed near plant and trees informing visitors of names - this is a lovely spot and worth exploring.

As you enter town from Moree along the Newell Highway there is a large parking area on the left with information signs, toilet, picnic tables and shaded areas.- there is even a   dump point for convenience.

This is a very friendly country town and a great spot to spend a few days before exploring other parts of Queensland.
