The Goondiwindi Botanic Gardens are definitely worth a visit when staying in this lovely town just over the NSW border. These Botanic Gardens have been created around a lake on the edge of town - along Brennans Road.

Drive through the entrance and you will find a number of covered picnic tables with barbeques facing the lake with large grassed areas for families. These areas of the gardens have playground facilities, shelter sheds, toilet amenities, all weather gravel roads and plenty of car parking.

Walking tracks meander through the 25-hectare gardens with signs placed near plant and trees informing visitors of their names. Native plants in the gardens are displayed in communities as they occur in nature - some unique to the Upper Darling Basin. If you are feeling energetic there is a walking track along the Macintrye River that leads to the gardens from the central part of town.

We were lucky enough to see a Diamond Firetail Finch which was very exciting. The lake itself has a nesting island for native birds such as the Wood Duck, Pelican and Spoonbill. It is also used for swimming and canoeing.

We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Goondiwindi Botanic Gardens - recommended as a peaceful day out.
