We stayed at Karumba Point Caravan Park during our visit to this part of Queensland. Karumba Point is on the Gulf of Carpentaria and is a very popular fishing spot.  We ran into people who head this way with their boats every year and stay for up to three  months. There are also several spots around Karumba Point where you can safely fish from the shore - just ask the locals.

The Sunset Tavern is a very popular place at the end of the day to watch the beautiful sunsets over the Gulf while enjoying a relaxing drink. This is also a great place to eat and we caught up with people we had met during our trip and enjoyed a meal in the lovely outdoor area overlooking the water.

This is the place to catch Barramundi, so we thought it would be the perfect place to get fresh take-away fish and chips - three shops at Karumba Point - only fair to try them all. Karumba Point Fishing Seafood Market sold very fresh crumbed Barramundi - the owner had just come back with his catch for the day so the staff filleted it and cooked it for us - delicious. Ash's at The Point Cafe and Store was chosen for our second takeaway lunch and again we had crumbed Barramundi.  This was also very good.

Next taste test was Seabreeze Take-away and convenience store which has a great range of food (grocery items), fishing and camping equipment as well as a take-away menu. Ordered crumbed Barramundi, salad and chips and we ate at the café before walking home - beautiful meal. In my opinion it is a toss-up between this shop and the Fish Market for the best Barramundi.  A great sign in this shop - "No shirt, No shoes, No problem. No manners, no service”. Apparently some of the people that come into the shop are very rude to the young staff!

A cycling track has been created between Karumba Point and Karumba which is about a 3.8  kilometre each way. This is relatively flat and a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon - make sure you know what the tide is doing.
