Karumba located at the Norman River on the Gulf of Carpentaria. This is a very popular fishing spot and we understand that visitors come back year after year and stay for several months - some of the best wild caught Barramundi in Australia.

We visited the Barramundi Discovery Centre to learn about this amazing fish where you will find out about the breeding cycle and feed a large barramundi - they have no teeth but a sand paper like mouth and move very quickly to get the food. I understand that this is the only hatchery in the world to breed the Southern Gulf Strain of Barramundi - they supply many areas around Queensland with fingerling to restock rivers and damns to ensure a fishing future. This was really interesting and I would highly recommend you take the time to visit the Barramundi Discovery Centre when staying in the area.

The local baker is a great place for morning tea and fresh bread – it has a good reputation and we enjoyed our sausage roll and spinach triangle. We went for a of a walk around town which is only small and discovered that most of the shops close over lunch.

We stayed at Karumba Point and there is now a cycle path between the two locations- just be aware of the tides. Another must when staying in the area is to head out to Karumba point and watch the sunset over the Gulf - the Sunset Tavern is very popular.
