Magnetic Island

Description

Magnetic Island is an island 8 kilometres offshore from the city of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. This 52 km2 mountainous island in Cleveland Bay has effectively become a suburb of Townsville, with 2,107 permanent residents. The island is accessible from Townsville Breakwater to Nelly Bay Harbour by ferry. There is a large 27 km2 National Park and bird sanctuary and walking tracks can be taken between the populated bays and to a number of tourist destinations such as the World War II forts.

We were lucky enough to be invited to stay on Magnetic Islands with friends.  They collected us up from the ferry terminal in Nelly Bay and drove us around for a scenic tour of the island. This is another beautiful part of Queensland and there seems to be lots to do - relax on the beach, snorkel, boating or walking on trails through the National Park. You may even get to see a Koala or rock wallaby. The island has plenty of places to eat with lots of the restaurants and bars featuring live music.

Magnetic Island is only a short ferry ride from Townsville - you can even take your car across on the Fantasea Ferry. Why not go across and spend the day or stay as long as you can.

Tips

  • Its a large island, so some form of motorised transport will be required if you plan to venture past Nelly Bay. We suggest you take your car across on the Fantasea Ferry or hire a scooter or 'Topless' car when you get there.
  • Take some comfortable shoes as there are many beautiful walking trails to explore.
  • There is a great golf course on the island, if you want some more exercise
  • Try and spend a few days on Magnetic Island if you can. There is lots to see and do.

Note

We did not take our van across to Magnetic Island,  our time was limited, as was our transport options. We apologise for the lack of RV related data at this particular location. We plan to rectify this on our next visit

Great place to explore and relax with the Family! We are a pretty active bunch so loved the hiking through the bush, hiring standup paddle boards and snorkelling! We often come here to explore with other Families as well. Highly recommended!!
