Port Douglas Markets are held each Sunday in Market Park, which adjoins ANZAC Park -bordered by Dickson Inlet and Wharf Street. A beautiful spot with the Coral Sea in the background. Port Douglas Sunday Markets provide locally produced food, fruit and veggies as well as hand crafted goods of every description. In fact, I understand that Council decided that the Port Douglas Sunday Market would be a “Cotters Market”, ensuring that all goods offered for sale were made by the stallholder.

I found it very exciting to wander around and marvel at all the home made goodies - some people really are very talented. There are lots of stall and we seemed to eat our way around with so many yummy things to taste:

  • chocolate coated frozen bananas
  • frozen ice block full of fruit – strawberry, kiwi, mango etc
  • fresh fruit juice – can have one variety or mix it up
  • shop call fruit pooh – selling real fruit sorbet made from frozen pieces of fruit pushed through a spiral juicer – mango, coconut and banana. There are about six varieties and you can have single fruit type of mix them
  • cooked dishes including yummy Thai
  • tea - freshly brewed
  • chocolate
  • coconut freshly opened for you to drink and then the stall holder will grind coconut in shell for you to eat – can add honey etc – very popular

We also found a variety of timber work and things made from coconut shells like the one eyed supported mug I purchased for my sister. Wooden spatulas made from local timber – Queensland Maple, and Plantation Mahogany (not native but has been grown here for over 100 years). Homemade clothes and jewellery were very popular.

As you can see there seems to be something for everyone and I would love to go back again just for the Market!!
