Sapphire

Description

Sapphire is a gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, an aluminium oxide (α-Al2O3). Whilst typically associated with the color blue, natural "fancy" sapphires also occur in yellow, purple, orange, and green colors; "parti sapphires" show two or more colors. The only color which sapphire cannot be is red - as red colored corundum is called ruby, another corundum variety.

Sapphire is a small town west of Emerald in the middle of Queensland and forms part of the Sapphire Gemfields region.  This is one of the largest sapphire bearing areas in the World with people coming to try their luck at fossicking in nearby creeks and fields.

The Blue Gem Caravan park is very neat and tidy and sits behind the general store – takeaways, jewellery, groceries, fuel and souvenirs. The town also has The Trading Post on Rifle Range Road which is a newsagent, supermarket, takeaway, ATM etc.

There is small RSL club selling meals, free camping area near the pool, and a number of gem shops.

An interesting part of outback Queensland.
