Eyre Peninsula

Description

Eyre Peninsula is a triangular peninsula in South Australia. It is bounded on the east by Spencer Gulf, the west by the Great Australian Bight, and the north by the Gawler Ranges. It is named after explorer Edward John Eyre who explored parts of the region in 1839-1841. The coastline was first charted by the expeditions of Matthew Flinders in 1801-1802 and French explorer Nicolas Baudin around the same time. The region's economy is primarily agricultural, with growing aquaculture, mining and tourism sectors. The main townships are Port Lincoln in the south, Whyalla and Port Augusta at the north east, and Ceduna at the northwest.

After driving across the Nullarbor we decided to explore the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia during our caravan adventure around Australia. This is a lovely part of the country with a number of small towns and villages dotted along the fabulous coastline. The roads are good (not too busy) but it can be very windy so take care when towing a caravan. Some beautiful little bays off the main road are great holiday destinations for the keen fisherman - Streaky Bay, Coffin Bay, Venus Bay, Tumby Bay, Cowell, Ceduna, Whyalla etc..

The aquaculture industry is huge in South Australia and this is definitely the place to enjoy fresh seafood - Coffin Bay Oysters, Tuna, Kingfish, Prawns etc. You can even swim with the Tuna, sharks or sea lions when you visit Port Lincoln. To see how the fresh seafood is processed I suggest you take a tour of the factory at the Fresh Fish Place in Port Lincoln.

Remember to take the tour of the HMAS Whyalla, a restored naval ship located beside the Whyalla Visitor Information Centre - look through the Maritime Museum while you are there.
