We visited the Flinders Ranges National Park during our recent caravanning adventure around South Australia. We chose to stay at the Wilpena Pound Resort Campground and really enjoyed our large site in this beautiful bush setting.  The park has a diverse range of activities including 4WD tours, bush walking, mountain bike adventures, scenic flights and visiting beautiful Aboriginal Rock paintings.

Here are some of the things we did during our trip to the Flinders Ranges:

  • Arkaroo Rock Art - just outside the National Park but a must when in the area
  • Boom or Bust walk near Wilpena Resort - 2 kilometre return
  • Bunyeroo Gorge – amazing rock formations – great views of the Flinders Ranges and crossed several areas where water would flow after rain
  • Brachina Gorge –  Several signs along the way informing us of how old some of the rocks are in this area.  Apparently this part of the Flinders Ranges has one of the best examples in the world of rock that dates between 640 and 520 million years old. Spotted two Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies sitting in the shade at one of the many lookouts.
  • Wilpena Pound Resort. - Visitor Information Centre, restaurant, cafe, general store, souvenirs, pool and a range of accommodation
  • Wangara lookout an 8 kilometre return walk from Wilpena Pound Resort past Hills Homestead, up to the lookout with views into Wilpena Pound

Fees apply to enter the National Park and a pass can be obtained from the Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre. Permits are required to stay at the campgrounds within the National Park and most of these had toilets as well as barbeque facilities.
