Murray River

The Murray River (or River Murray) is Australia's longest river, at 2,508 kilometres (1,558 mi) in length. The Murray rises in the Australian Alps, draining the western side of Australia's highest mountains, and then meanders across Australia's inland plains, forming the border between the states of New South Wales and Victoria as it flows to the northwest into South Australia. It turns south at Morgan for its final 315 kilometres (196 mi), reaching the ocean at Lake Alexandrina.

The Murraylands area of South Australia encompasses the Murray River from Morgan (the bend in the river) to Lake Alexandrina. There are a number of towns along the way that were once important stopping locations for paddle steamers carrying cargo as well as passengers up and down this huge river system.  Nowadays they are popular holiday destinations for boating and fishing and have large areas of farming including wineries.

Some places we visited while on our caravanning adventure along the Murray River from Milang (South Australia) to Yarrawonga (Victoria):

  • Milang - on the shores of Lake Alexandrina - large caravan park
  • Longhorne Creek - wineries and Newmans Horseradish Farm
  • Wellington - old courthouse (cafe) at ferry crossing - first established in 1839
  • Talem Bend - lovely park in centre of town with Visitor Information Centre - at the junction of several highways (ferry crossing)
  • Murray Bridge - large town with lovely foreshore parklands full of sporting facilities
  • Mannum - water skiing, houseboats, Hermann Gass bird sanctuary. Two ferries across the river. Mary Ann Reserve along the waterfrong with very good boat mooring areas.
  • Walker Flat - large cliffs along the river - great to view at sunset (ferry crossing)
  • Swan Reach - near Big Bend Lookout - beautiful cliffs in either direction (ferry crossing)
  • Blanchetown - home of Lock 1 - popular for boating
  • Morgan - bend in the river (ferry crossing). Lovely parking/picnic area overlooking the Murray.

Houseboats are a great way to explore the river system and there are a number of mooring places provided at the above towns. We really enjoyed the ferry crossing feature of the Murray River which operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week - they are big enough to transport truck, cars and caravans etc. across the water. I think this is a great service which is provided free of charge.
