Olympic Dam

The Olympic Dam mine is a large poly-metallic underground mine located in South Australia, 550 km NNW of Adelaide. It is the fourth largest copper deposit and the largest known single deposit of uranium in the world, although copper is the largest contributor to total revenue. Approximately 70% of the mine's revenue comes from copper, 25% from uranium, and the remainder from silver and gold. BHP Billiton has owned and operated the mine since 2005. The mine was previously owned by Western Mining Corporation.

Olympic Dam is a copper, gold, silver and uranium mine located close to Roxby Downs in South Australia. Turn off the Stuart Highway at Pimba and travel past Woomera towards the Roxby Downs Information Centre for information on the mine site. This operation is closed to the public. Olympic Dam is the largest underground mine in Australia which has a large number of full time and contract employees. Roxby Downs was built in 1988 to support the operation

The Olympic Dam Discovery Tour leaves from the Visitor Information Centre each Wednesday and includes a DVD presentation on Roxby Downs and the mine with a virtual underground tour, a surface tour of the mine site and a nature tour of the Arid Reccovery Reserve located nearby. They require 10 people before this tour operates so it is best to check before arriving Wednesday morning (08 8671 5941).

Arid Recovery is a conservation research initiative dedicated to the restoration of Australia’s arid lands. It began in 1997 when a large area was fenced to eradicate feral cats, rabbits and foxes in order to reintroduce species of locally extinct mammals. This has been very successful -a great partnership between industry, government, research and community.
