Orroroo

Description

Orroroo is a town in the Flinders Ranges region of South Australia. At the 2006 census, Orroroo had a population of 543. The Wilmington-Ucolta Road passes through here, intersecting there with the southern stretch of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks. The narrow gauge rail line was extended to Orroroo also in 1881 and Quorn in 1882, connecting with the new line from Port Augusta. This line has now been abandoned. Orroroo is situated near Goyder's Line, a line drawn up in 1865 by Surveyor General Goyder which he believed indicated the edge of the area suitable for agriculture.

We drove through Orroroo in South Australia on our trip from Port Augusta to Peterborough. This is a small country town and is an interesting place to stop for a break from driving. The road over the Flinders ranges can be very windy and steep in parts so take your time.

Orroroo has a range of accommodation and eating places if you choose to spend some time in this part of South Australia. Here are some things to see in the area:

  • Early settlers cottage
  • Aboriginal carvings - thousands of years old
  • poems carved in a rock face - gully off Pekina Creek
  • The Giant Gum Tree - a huge red gum with circumference of about 10.4 metres
  • Magpie images located on historic buildings - find all 12 and get a free cuppa with compliments of the local Council
  • Tank Hill Lookout - views over the Walloway plain and the township of Orroroo.

The Orroroo-Carieton Visitor Centre has all the information on what to do and see in this part of the country - they are located on Second Street (the main road through town).
