Overland Corner Hotel

Description

Overland Corner is a settlement on the Murray River in the Riverland area of South Australia, near Barmera and Cobdogla. The area had traditionally been used as an aboriginal camping ground and was then used by drovers taking stock from New South Wales to Adelaide.

The Overland Corner Hotel is an iconic historic pub on the Goyder Highway between Morgan and Renmark - as you travel along the Murray River in South Australia. We had been advised by fellow travellers to stop in for a beer on our way to Renmark so we crossed the Murray River on the vehicular ferry at Waikerie to join up with the Goyder Highway and make our way to the pub. There was plenty of room to park while towing the caravan.

Overlander Corner Hotel is an iconic old pub in a lovely bush setting. This place has lots of history and the publican was more than happy to sit and chat with us while we enjoyed a drink in the coolness of the old hotel. He has a beer made especially for the pub so of couse we had to try that - very nice indeed. This is apparently a very popular spot for meals on weekends and people travel from all over to eat here. The pub served locally made beers and wines and has regular live events.

The Overland Corner Hotel was originally set up as a watering hole for drovers and overlanders operating between New South Wales and Adelaide, it also served as a temporary camping ground for steamers passing through on the River Murray only a few hundred metres away. The Limestone building was completely restored after being purchased by the National Trust of South Australia and is the oldest structure in the area.

There is a free camping, caravanning area out the back available to customers and the charge for a shower is $5. The outside toilets of the pub are open 24 hours a day for those staying overnight.
