Port Victoria Jetty

Description

Port Victoria Maritime Museum is a maritime museum on Yorke Peninsula, which is housed in the original general cargo shed which was brought out from England in kit form in 1877. It was erected at the landward end of the jetty. The jetty took only seven months to build and was completed in January 1878. Household goods for the early settlers in the town and surrounding farmlands were brought by steamers from Port Adelaide and stored in the cargo shed until the settlers’ homes were completed.

RvTrips' review

18 May 2016

Port Victoria is a very small town on the western side of the Yorke Peninsula (about half way down the coast) with a caravan park right on the water. This is apparently a great spot for scuba diving as there are a number of ship wrecks off the coast – scuba refills are available at the caravan park and the shop at the jetty. The Jetty is also a popular spot for fishing.

There is a lovely lookout above the jetty with plenty of room for parking the caravan and great views of the coastline. Signs direct you to a Geological walk along the foreshore with plenty of information describing features along the pay.

A small Maritime Museum administered by the National Trust is housed in the original cargo store located on the jetty - built in 1878.  It is open for a couple of hours each day -  2 pm to 5 pm Saturday, Sunday and public holidays and also on Tuesday and Thursday during January.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch at Port Victoria during our travels around South Australia.
