Quorn is a friendly town at the junction of the Flinders Ranges Highway and Horrocks Highway in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. We travelled through Quorn on our trip to and from Wilpena Pound.

The Visitor Information Centre is located at the Quorn Railway Stations which is one of the stopping points for the Pichi Richi Explorer. This is part of the track for the old Ghan railway line and the restored steam or diesel engines run out of Quorn from March to November. The Railway Station has been renovated and the Visitor Information Centre is full of beautifully made local products with, of course, plenty of information and maps to explore the area. There are so many interesting things to see in this part of the country that I would highly recommend you pick up some brochures and gather some local knowledge before heading out of town.

The Quorn Caravan park can be found behind the Railway Station on Silo Road - lovely bush setting and plenty of shade.

The town of Quorn is very popular with day visitors from Port Augusta as well as holiday makers - the cafes and restaurants are very busy on weekends. We managed to visit the three cafes on First Street:

  • Emily's Bistro housed on an old Emporium - great homemade pies and very interesting memorabilia displayed on the old shelving around the walls. There are even more interesting things to see downstairs - ask to have a look
  • Quorn Cafe - the organic cafe where we ate savoury scones with our coffee - delicious. They have a second hand shop out the back (past the dog and parrot sitting in the garden) which is packed with goodies.
  • Quandong Cafe - of course we had quandong (native plum) cheese cake with our coffee at this lovely cafe. They have a range of jewelry made from the seeds from the quandong.

Of course we did not eat at all three on the same day and I am reluctant to choose my favourite - we thoroughly enjoyed all three. I understand there are several hotels around Quorn that also serve great meals. I would not hesitate to return to this lovely town and highly recommend a stop when you are heading to Wilpena Pound in South Australia.
