Victor Harbor

Victor Harbor is a town in South Australia on the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, about 80 km south of the centre of Adelaide. The city is the largest population centre on the peninsula, with an economy based upon agriculture, fisheries and various industries. It is also a highly popular tourist destination, with the city's population greatly expanded during the summer holidays, usually by Adelaide locals looking to escape the summer heat.

Victor Harbor is a large city on the shores of Encounter Bay, Fleurieu Peninsula, only about 85 kilometres from Adelaide. The Visitor Information Centre can be found on the Esplanade and has a large car park big enough to park while towing the caravan (note some spaces require payment so make sure you check signage to avoid a fine).

This is a popular holiday destination and there are plenty of things to see and do in Victor Harbor and surrounding areas. Here are some of the things we found interesting:

  • travel on the horse drawn tram to Granite Island
  • Granite Island walking track with great views back over Victor Harbor and out to sea - look out for seals in the water
  • Penguin Centre - Granite Island (they also run Penguin Tours)
  • Victor Harbor Golf Course and the famous first hole. This is listed as one of the 100 best holes in Australia – tee off beside the club house and hit down a hill
  • The Bluff Encounter Bay - great views. There is a walking track around the hill
  • foreshore of the Bay.  Lots of parking – Bike path along esplanade, beach volley ball courts, tennis courts, bowling greens (several) lovely old pubs
  • SA whaling Centre – 3 floors of interactive exhibits and 3D theatrette
  • Encounter Coast Discovery Centre and Museum (open 1 – 4 pm)
  • Alexandrina Cheese – Sneyd Road, Mount Jagged
  • Victor Harbor Winery (nearby) and Hindmarsh Valley Goat cheese outlet

We stayed at Port Elliot which is only a short drive from Victor Harbor as it was schoolies time and the caravan parks at Victor Harbor were closed. There are some lovely small towns along the Fleurieu Peninsula - Middleton great for surfing and Goolwa (Hindmarsh Island) near the mouth of the Murray River.
