Granite Island - Victor Harbor

Description

Granite Island, also known by the Ramindjeri people as Nulcoowarra, is a small island next to Victor Harbor, South Australia, not far from South Australia's capital city, Adelaide. Although there are no permanent residents, there are buildings and shelters on the island, including a cafe. It is a popular tourist attraction, particularly for people wishing to see little penguins (commonly called "fairy penguins") which live there. The island also supported resident wallabies in the 1980s which captivated visiting tourists.

Granite Island is a Recreation and Nature Park located near Victor Harbor in South Australia. This island is connected to the mainland by a wooden causeway and you and either walk across or take a leisurely ride on the horse drawn tram between the two locations. As the name would suggest the island is made up of huge granite boulders. A walking track has been created around Granite Island with great views of the southern ocean and across the water to Victor Harbor. It is interesting to see how the granite boulders have weathered over time - not surprising as it was very windy during our visit.

Between June and October you may be lucky enough to spot a southern right whale from one of the many lookouts along the Kaiki Walk. We saw a seal swimming in the waters near the Kiosk/bistro but unfortunately all the penguins had left for the year. The Penguin Centre is located on Granite Island where you can learn about these beautiful little creatures and see rescued penguins being hand fed.

Granite Island Recreation Park is open from sunrise to sunset, however Penguin and wildlife tours are conducted most evenings around dusk (book at the Victor Harbor Visitor Information Centre on 8551 0777).  NOTE: only people on the Granite Island Guided Penguin Tour can access the island after dusk.
