The Red Centre Way

The Red Centre Way

Description

Larapinta Drive is a designated state route in the Northern Territory of Australia. It forms the primary road access to the community of Hermannsburg, as well as a number of tourist attractions located west of Alice Springs, including the Alice Springs Desert Park, West MacDonnell National Park, Kings Canyon, monuments dedicated to Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira and Royal Flying Doctor Service founder John Flynn, as well as Albert Namatjira's house near Hermannsburg. Larapinta is the local Arrernte name for the Finke River a major watercourse in the area. The length of Larapinta Drive is marketed as part of the "Red Centre Way" tourist drive.

The Red Centre Way heads west from Alice Springs, along the West MacDonnell Ranges and through Kings Canyon and on to Uluru (Ayers Rock).  Part of the Red Centre way will take you on unsealed Road and I would think you should be driving a 4WD to tackle the whole route. We travelled along this road as far as Glen Helen Homestead (all sealed) and called in to see various landscape features along this part of the journey - Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Serpentine Gorge, the Ochre Pits and Ormiston Gorge. This was a full day drip from Alice Springs.

NOTE: The Red Centre Way pass through Aboriginal Land (the Mereenie Loop) and you will be required to obtain a permit. I understand these permits are available from the Visitor Information Centre in Alice Springs, Hermansburg Service Station, Glen Helen Homestead and/or Kings Canyon Resort.

We did not travel this way during our last trip through the Northern Territory as we were towing a caravan and opted to visit Uluru via the Stuart and Lasseter Highways.  I spoke to several people who had ventured the whole length of the Red Centre Way and gushed about the magnificent scenery. I will have to add this to my bucket list.
