Bendigo is a large town in the central part of Victoria - about 150 Kilometres north of Melbourne. While visiting this historical town created during the gold rush we staryed at BIG4 Bendigo Marong Holiday Park which is about 20 minutes from the CBD. This beautiful park can be found Calder Highway in the small village of Marong. This is a perfect park when travelling with children as it has a huge range of wonderful play areas and the owners go out of their way to make sure there are special activities during Christmas School Holidays.

Just a short walk from the caravan park is the Marong Family Hotel (MFH) - great service and large range of meals including signature lamb dishes. These are created using lamb from a property the hotel’s owners operate nearby - can't get fresher than that!

Our first stop in the Bendigo CBD was the Visitor Information Centre found in the beautiful old Post Office building - a grand old structure. Short term parking is provided alongside the building and if you follow the signs you will find designated parking for those towing caravans. Very helpful staff with plenty of local knowledge and happy to make bookings. To discover some of the history of Bendigo I suggest a ride on the Bendigo Vintage Talking Tram.  Tickets can be  purchased from the VIC or the Tram Depot and these last for two days during which time you can get on and off at any of the stops.

We found a long term car park  near the Ulumbarra Theatre which is housed at the old Bendigo Jail and on the top side of Rosalind Park. Three hour parking cost $2.40.
We enjoyed lunch at a beautiful little Italian Restaurant on View Street – Borchelli Ristorante. Red and white checked tablecloths and dining inside or out - tables on the footpath or behind the restaurant in a small courtyard.  It was late but no worries as they serve meals all day – great for us. The lunch special consisted of any pasta or risotto from the menu and a glass of wine or beer.  Great services and the best Bruschetta we have ever tasted.

Walked to the top of the Poppet Head Lookout at the top of Rosalind Park with amazing views all around Bendigo. We then wandered through the busy Rosalind Park to the original Myer Department Store – looking a bit old but interesting.

I would just like to say that we received great service from Bendigo Prestige Jayco Sales and Service Centre when we had to have water issue resolved. Great set up with two drive in bays for vans and a covered workshop area. Our caravan was left under cover when finished, in a space where we could easily hook up to car and drive off.  Wonderful service and help from Alec.

We also visited several other caravan parks in town:

  • BIG4 Bendigo Ascot Holiday Park - This is a very neat looking park on the outskirts of Bendigo and well sign-posted from the Calder Highway.  Located close to Bendigo Racecourse.
  • BIG4 Parks Bendigo Park Lane Holiday Park. This is a huge park, and upon entry you are drawn to the brightly coloured cabins lining the road to the office/reception area and guests parking bays.
  • Avondel Caravan Park. 723 Calder Highway, Maiden Gully  - Bendigo. Nice looking park with easy access.
