Kerang is a beautiful country town in Victoria between Swan Hill and Cohuna on the Murray Valley Highway. We called in one Sunday during our trip along the Murray River and were pleasantly surprised by this tidy town with great gardens. We parked near the Visitor Information Centre and went for a walk around town - it was very busy for a Sunday with plenty of people enjoying coffee and the local markets. I particularly liked looking through the Kerang Redgum Works and More, Furnitureone shop - amazing table tops made from one piece of timber.

There are 50 lakes in the area around Kerang, making it the destination of thousands of water birds. The Middle Reedy Lake Ibis Rookery, has become recognised as the largest breeding ground in the world for ibis. Most of the lakes in the region are accessible for boating and other water sports - check with the Visitor Information Centre for any restriction and picnic area.

Lester Smith Lookout Tower - an old water tower is located at the Visitor Information and a climb to the top will apparently provide great panoramic views of the area. It also houses a wonderful display of minerals, fossils, shells and gemstones (unfortunately this is not open on Sunday). There is so much to see and do in Kerang - I look forward to heading back to spend a few days.
