Victoria Hwy

Description

The Victoria Highway links the Great Northern Highway in Western Australia with the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory. The highway is a part of the Perth - Darwin National Highway link. It is signed as National Highway 1, and is part of Highway 1, a circular route around the country. It is 555 kilometres (345 mi) long, and most of the route – some 470 kilometres (290 mi) – lies within the Northern Territory. In some areas it runs in parallel with the Northern Territory's Victoria River, from which its name originates.

We drove the length of the Victoria Highway towing our caravan. This is a very good road from Katherine to the intersection of the Great Northern Highway near Kununurra. We did this trip in one day but there are several places to stop along the way if you want to break the journey. Two of these are:

  • Victoria River - a roadhouse with fuel, bar, cafe and caravan park. This is very neat and tidy with fabulous timber benches in the shop. Beautiful scenery - close to Gregory National Park
  • Timber Creek - a small town with two caravan parks. Very shady and close to the river. There is a small IGA supermarket, Hotel and several shops.

Bradshw Bridge, just past Timer Creek, is a great spot to stop and take photos of the Victoria River - look out for the sign as it is just off the main highway. The Victoria River is large and had plenty of water flowing through it - great for barramundi fishing.

You will see plenty of boab trees as you approach the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. The Quarantine Station is on the Victoria Highway and there are a number of restriction regarding fresh fruit and vegetables, honey as well as some nuts going into West Australia.
