The Ord River is in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia and flows past the town of Kununurra. The Ord River has plenty of water all year, thanks to the Lake Argyle and the Kununurra Diversion Dams.

One of the highlights of our caravanning trip around Australia was to cruise down the Ord River from Lake Argyle to Lake Kununurra. We boarded the speedboat belonging to Triple J Tours and were shown the sites along this amazing river. The rocky escarpments either side have been carved out by water rushing down the Ord River over many years - spectacular scenery.

The Ord River is a very popular place for fishing - everyone wants to catch a Barramundi. My husband and son have both caught Barramundi over 1 metre long in the Ord River - we have the photos to prove it (before the fish were released).

House boats are available for you to cruise around Lake Kununurra and up the Ord River at your leisure. We ran into people who had actually been canoeing on the Ord River up towards Lake Argyle - camping along the way.

I went fishing on the Ord River whilst visiting Kununurra and the experience has not been matched so far. The barra fishing was awesome, and there were just as many massive mud crabs, delicious. It was also a great place to see some big, wild crocs up close early in the mornings before they had warmed up. I remember seeing one blocking the exit to a small creek with its body, stopping the fish, and waiting for its body to warm in the sun until it had the energy to hunt them. Great experience.
