On our recent trip to the Pilbara region we stayed close to the coast visiting Port Headland, Point Samson, Karratha, Cossack, Roebourne and Dampier. We had heard about the wonders of Karijini and Millstream Chichester National Parks but unfortunately the weather was getting very hot and the wildflowers had finished - we decided to visit these wonders on another trip.

We joined a tour of Port Hedland Harbour on a Seafarer Boat which transfers crew members from large ships to the Seafarer Centre. What a great service they provide in ferrying the crew members to and from ships anchored in the harbour. The Centre provides internet, TV, pool tables and has a bus service to town for the crew members to do some shopping. These large iron ore ships are about 300 metres long and 50 metres wide.

Our tour of the Dampier Archipelago took us past the Northwest Shelf gas plant and we watched as one of these gas tankers left the harbour. These are huge operations and the water ways can be very busy.

There are several areas along this beautiful coastline where you can witness the staircase to the moon - this occurs at very low tide when there is a full moon rising in the sky. We went to Cossack to watch this phenomena but the clouds rolled in and we missed our opportunity - hopefully there will be a next time!!!

I worked in the Pilbara for a year and it is amazing. The temperature is warm but not too uncomfortable. They do have a wet season so I would check this before setting off travelling as the rain can cut off access to a few areas. There are lots of beautiful places to see, I have not seen it all and want to go back!
